Hosts George Watt ’73 and Chris Murch ’83, broadcast live from the flight deck of USS MIDWAY, the location of the 2007 Poinsettia Bowl pep rally, which will take place during the broadcast.
George and Chris are joined by Scott McGaugh, the marketing director of the USS MIDWAY Museum, and Mac McLaughlin ’72, president and CEO of the museum, to discuss the carrier’s amazing history, as the pep rally preparation begins in the background.
John Burkholder ’73, docent for the USS MIDWAY Museum, joins the show to describe the rigorous training process required to be a docent as well as his own history as a pilot on MIDWAY.
The show takes a look back to the WWII Battle of Midway as historian Karl Zingheim ’86 joins Scott McGaugh on the show to dispel some of the myths associated with this historic battle.
The fifth segment of the show begins just as the pep rally kicks off in the background. Bruce Binkowski, executive director of the Poinsettia Bowl and the Holiday Bowl, and Chet Gladchuk, the Naval Academy athletic director, join the show to discuss Navy’s bowl history in San Diego, and the significance of the Poinsettia Bowl.
At the opening of the segment, George Watt addresses the pep rally crowd and thanks Alumni generosity for the 6,000 donated tickets for the game. As the football team passes by, Chris and George discuss the successes of the past few seasons of Navy football.
Following a fireworks show on MIDWAY’s flight deck, Eric Ruden, the deputy director of athletics, describes the detailed process behind planning a bowl game.
The show culminates with Vice Admiral Samuel Locklear ’77, USN, a former Commandant of Midshipmen at the Naval Academy, who discusses his current role as the Commander of the U.S. 3rd Fleet, overseeing all naval forces in the Pacific.
