As deputy postmaster general of the American colonies from 1753 to 1774, Benjamin Franklin greatly
reorganized the fledgling postal system to make it efficient and profitable. Franklin was later appointed
America's first postmaster general. In 1847, the United States issued postage stamps for the first time.
These are the 5¢ Benjamin Franklin stamp and the 10¢ George Washington stamps.
