Louis Foreman, Co-Executive Producer, with television show Everyday Edison
Gearing up for production of their 3rd season of Everyday Edisons, Louis Foreman discusses the PBS series. The series sheds light on the complex product design and development process encountered by ordinary people whose raw concepts are transformed into tangible products from design and engineering to branding, commercialization and marketing. We address the importance of protecting the intellectual property of these ideas with patenting.

Expedited processing of a patent application is now available at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). This expedited processing is completed in twelve months. There are some drawbacks to this and an inventor should not request this service without consulting an intellectual property attorney.

Some companies require patent pending status while others will license an invention that is not even patentable. One thing that almost any company will require is performing an thorough search to ensure your invention does not infringe on someone else’s patent.

Office actions serve the purpose of ensuring that your patent is valid and enforceable. Unenforceable patents would create a court backlog and stifle technology.

Think of your utility patent application as fencing around your real property. If your patent application is drafted too narrowly you may give up some of your intellectual property.

A properly written patent is a requirement of manufacturers and distributors. Often, before investing in an invention, the first thing they do is check to see what patent attorney wrote the patent application.
