Sue and Ron Zampogna founded Flickerwood Wine Cellars in Cane, Pennsylvania, in 2000. Their 2006 Flickerberry Dew, a blend of blackberry and red raspberry juices from New York State-grown fruit, won Best Fruit Wine category in the 2009 International Eastern Wine Competition. According to Pennsylvania wine-making laws, a winery must produce no less than 75 percent of their wines from Pennsylvania-grown fruit AND within a radius of 350 miles fro the winery. When the Zampogna's founded Flickerwood Wine Cellars there were less than ten wineries in the state of Pennsylvania. Now, there are over 80! Check out their strawberry-rhubarb wine named Strawberry Field, and their straight red raspberry wine. Real fruit makes real wine!

What do you think of when you see the word Blonde? How about French beer? Renée Schettler is an editor and writer about all things food, wine, spirits and beer. In the Summer 2009 issue of France Magazine she presents a fascinating tale of French beverage history that will surprise all but the well-informed Francophile. By the late 1700s, there were more than a thousand family-owned breweries in France, many near Flanders.

"Not going to France anytime soon? Whole Foods Market and a variety of liquor and beer stores carry French brands. There is no single resource for locating retail outlets, but some can be found through wine-search.com." In the US, famous-named restaurants and bars are increasingly giving equal weight to wine and beer, "with a focus on often-overlooked options in both categories. The intent is to surprise." Chefs are.... "preparing tasting menus tailored specifically to a beer's terroir as well as its flavor." To read Schettler's article, pick up a copy of the summer 2009 issue of France Magazine in bookstores now, or subscribe online.
