The key questions addressed in this segment deal with the nature of conflict and how a difference of opinion can move from a discussion to an emotionally charged conflict? How you handle disagreements has a significant impact on how conflict is managed.
To become a high-performance team, the team has to establish norms of behavior that allow them to constructively resolve issues. High-performance teams have to be action focused not blamed focused. Teams have to develop conversational competency as a pathway to high-performance.
The resolution of conflict does not come naturally. Teams have to learn to deal with conflict constructively. Teams have to learn to move from Inauthentic or Closed Conversations to Open and Authentic Conversations. Teams have to learn to come to consensus in a way that produces the most effective decision.
People have transactional conversations on a daily basis. Hopefully, the team operates predominately at the Open conversational level instead of the Inauthentic or Closed Conversational level. However, there are some issues that have to do with the relationship which are not transactional. They are relational in nature. These conversations are less frequent, but have to be handled effectively if the team wants to perform at a high level. These types of conversations are called Authentic Conversations.
