Doug Dwyer of DreamMakers Bath & Kitchen, John Hewitt of Liberty Tax & StopHungerNow.org, And Frank Milner of Tutor Doctor

01 Former Franchise Show host Jack Warren sits in for Jeff to interview the "King of Kitchen Remodeling". Doug Dwyer is President and Chief Stewarding Officer of DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen. Since 1997, he has guided the franchise to serve as the leader in the kitchen and bath remodeling industry with approximately 80 independently owned and operated franchises nationwide. Throughout his franchising career, Dwyer has worked to keep the company centered on its service to people, both franchisees and customers. The vision that he has set for DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen clearly defines this goal. Instead of focusing only on growth and profit, DreamMaker's brand position has been aimed at strong margins and quality of life. With more than 23 years of experience in franchising, Dwyer has held several leadership positions at The Dwyer Group, based in Waco, Texas. Dwyer's honors include leading DreamMaker to be named the 2004 Remodeler of the Year by Professional Remodeler magazine, one of Remodeling Magazine's Big 50 and Top 100 firms, Qualified Remodeler's Top 500, and repeated listings in Entreprener magazine's Franchise 500. Kitchen and Bath Business also named him to the Cool 5 Under 35.

02 & 03 Chris Murch, founder and CEO of wsRadio.com, Annapolis grad, and former USMC Captain, joins Jeff on air this Memorial Day to thank John Hewitt and his staff at Liberty Tax for their work in supporting our troops. Then listen to Jeff and John talk about John's passion to stop world hunger. John Hewitt's personal mission is ending world hunger in his lifetime. In 1998, Hewitt and Reverend Ray Buchanan launched a world crusade against hunger by founding Stop Hunger Now, a non-profit 501(c) (3) international relief organization headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. Since its inception, Stop Hunger Now (http://www.stophungernow.org) has provided over $56 million of emergency food, medicine and life-saving supplies in over 70 countries. Professionally, John is CEO of Liberty Tax Service, and is an influential icon in the tax industry, nationally recognized as an entrepreneurial visionary with a blueprint for tax industry success. For the tenth time, Accounting Today has named Hewitt one of the Top 100 most influential persons in the tax industry. Accounting Today also recognized Hewitt on its Top 100 list while he was CEO of Jackson Hewitt Tax Service. More than 3,200 LibertyTax offices are currently operating in the United Statesand Canada. The International Franchise Association honored John Hewitt as Entrepreneur of the Year in February at the IFA Annual Convention in San Diego. Perhaps John's greatest professional accomplishment overshadowing all his other awards and accolades is the fact the he is a veteran of 41 tax seasons with Liberty, Jackson Hewitt, and H&R Block.

04 Jeff interviews Frank Milner who has a deep knowledge of childhood development, and explores with Frank the global issues confronting education today. Frank Milner, President of Tutor Doctor, has been instrumental in the rapid expansion and market success of the one-on-one tutoring franchise. Milner is known for growing one of Canada's hottest technology franchises to top in its category. Milner became involved with Toronto-based Tutor Doctor in 2007 and has seen the rise of tutoring become so pervasive that it has changed the face of Canadian and American education. Tutor Doctor is a leader in providing affordable one-on-one supplementary education to students and adults through offering in-home tutoring to families. The company also leverages a leading-edge e-tutoring platform to reach cities and regions throughout the world not yet serviced by a local Tutor Doctor office. The Tutor Doctor platform offers many advantages compared to the traditional "learning center" tutoring model. About 10 years ago, John Hooi had a simple idea and a desire to make a difference. He wondered why parents had to adjust their family's busy schedules and drive half way across town just to put their child in another classroom with more kids...when in fact it was the classroom experience that their child was struggling with in the first place. Over the last 10 years, the Tutor Doctor vision has taken shape. In 2003 the company turned to franchising as a way of expanding the company's impact and meeting the vast market demand. Now with offices internationally, the Tutor Doctor vision is becoming a reality as the lives of students and their families are being positively impacted.

Segment 04 - The Genisis of a Successful Franchise Concept: Whippersnappers! Jeff and Christine go to Franchising 101 to discuss the ingredients behind a great franchise concept. Whippersnappers, whose description as a children's photo studio would be an enormous understatement, combines creativity, ingenuity, and a dynamic founder and CEO, Lisa Flynn into a knockout concept destined to be the next 'category killer'. So how does a new concerpt like Whippersnappers go from 0-60 without the infrastructure of a McDonalds or Blockbuster (two of Jeff's alma maters)? They outsource development--lead generation, franchise sales, real estate and construction--to FRANDEAVOR. There are dozens of 'consultants', but FRANDEAVOR, headed by Jeff & Christine, bring experienced corporate proceedures and methodology to small and medium-sized franchisors. Not all new concepts will beat the odds and come from behind like Mine That Bird--Jeff and Christine turn the odds into your favor.

Flip Flop Shops is the authentic retailer of the hottest brands and latest styles of flip flops and sandals. It's more than just a shop...it's a lifestyle. This is how the story goes.......Founder, Todd Giatrelis (Size 11) and Co-Founder & Trainer, Sarah Towne (Size 9), headed to a convention in Vegas. Sarah was wearing uncomfortable shoes. Sarah NEEDS a pair of flip flops. Sarah searches far and wide through Vegas but can't find a pair of flip flops to save her life. Segment 03 Retro Fitness - Eric Casaburi Listen to Jeff and Christine's interview with Eric Casburi, President of Retro Fitness and learn about the article he was recently interviewed for in Club Industry's Business Pro Magazine, April 2009 Edition. Here's some of what is included in the article......."You'd never know there was a recession if you talked to Eric Casaburi. The founder of Retrofitness, Colts Neck, NJ, speaks animatedly about how he plans to expand his 40 corporate and franchised clubs by 350 in the next three years. And he says he has the money to do it. Casaburi's private equity partner, Lake Capital, Chicago, was one of several companies that wooed Casaburi, finally winning him over and infusing an undisclosed amount of capital into his company last fall (although Lake Capital's Web site says it typically commits $50 million to $75 million of equity into companies). The private equity firm just infused another $5 million into Retrofitness this spring. “We joke around in the office that we are in the ‘Retro’ bubble,” Casaburi says. “Not that we don't feel bad that there's a recession, but actually, it's fueled my company's growth.” With $1.2 billion under asset management, Lake Capital wants to spread its money around but can't seem to find the right fit, Casaburi says. One of the private equity firm's principals told Casaburi recently that he typically looks at 2,000 businesses a year and buys about four, but this year he may have to look at 4,000 businesses and buy just two." Sounds interesting doesn't it? To read more go to www.fitnessbusinesspro.com. Eric's a regular on The Franchise Show about all things entrepreneurial. Welcome back, Eric!

Segment 04 BrightStar Healthcare - Shelly Sun

Jeff and Christine can hear the passion in her voice as they interview Shelly Sun, Co-founder of BrightStar Healthcare. The inspiration for BrightStar Healthcare came from Shelly and her husband JD's own family experience. When their late Grandma was suffering from cancer, they were surprised by how difficult it was to find quality homecare professionals to help care for her. They made calls, left messages, and did a lot of waiting. It took a long time before they finally found people they could trust. They are forever grateful for the help their caregivers provided during their time of need. The creation of BrightStar Healthcare stems from their journey with their Grandma. Shelly & JD made a promise to Grandma that they would create a great company that would provide families and their loved ones the highest level of accessible in home senior care, dignity, and personal attention they need and deserve. Learn how BrightStar has positioned themselves in the market, and how Shelly brings a CPA's discipline to systems and processes while maintaining a commitment to care.
